TRULLO FERNANDO HISTORY

The construction of the Trullo began between the early 1900s and the First World War. The land was initially leased for agricultural use in 1894 by a parish priest of San Vito dei Normanni to a farmer from San Michele by mean of a feudal contract called "emphyteusis". Farmers built the trullo according to tradition as a shelter for the summer cultivations to stay in the countryside without recovering to the village on every evening. The original building consisted of 4 cones called "Titteli", corresponding to today's bedroom and main room. The foundations accomodate for a water tank which accumulated rainwater that was collected with an iron or wooden bucket as needed, from inside the trullo. These cisterns were dug by hand into the rock, the internal chamber was plastered to be waterproof and resistant (hypogeal).
